personal
the motivation
i was alone with our dog for quite a while while silvi was recovering and i started thinking about getting fit. well it was a grand plan and a bit over ambitious. one hour in the gym, one hour jogging, two hours on the kona ph.d. followed by an hours rest, then four hours of hiking with a vertical height gain of 500 meters+ and finally one hour on the motorbike ...

yes well that lasted about two weeks. first to go was the gym. then the motorbike. then the road biking. then the hours rest. all that remained was the walking. three circuits of the footpaths in front of furtschellas was 9.6 kilometers and a long walk could be 14 kilometers from sils over fuorcla grevas and out to the julier pass.

it was on one of those long walks that i started thinking about a return to climbing ...
ueila
ueila is the greeting locals use for their friends here in the ober engadin. the native dialect is rumantsch. the local farming families in val fex and in sils-baselgia and sils/seglias still speak it.

of course at one end of the valley school is taught in italian and in st. moritz it’s high german. years ago the silly hotels insisted. now they all have portuguese workers it’s too late and the locals have lost their heritage.

it’s great to watch the children learn to speak two or three languages as if it’s entirely normal which it is in this valley. don’t you wish you could go back and start again ...
who am I
my name is bill. i live in the engadin. a beautiful valley in the south east corner of switzerland.

i'm here because it's a paradise for outdoor sports. we have it all right on the door step. the spring brings hiking, free climbing, hiking, trail running and nordic walking. then there is winter sport. if you are a climber you can be in the valley of bergell in twenty minutes. bike, bus or drive down the maloja pass. the bergell is a climber's paradise with albigna and the sciora famous for the piz badile.

i'm here to tell you the story of my return to climbing. i was a climber in my twenties in England. now i'm 64 and trying to get climbing fit. read on ...
